Instrument Check

G500 and 6 Pack

G500

In the Piper Archer we have the Garmin G500 (as you can see in image 1). Are flight instruments will be on the PFD (left screen) and we also have 3 standby instruments to the right of the MFD, just incase our PFD, AHRS, or ADC fail. During our "After Start" checklist, we do a flight instrument check to make sure all our instruments are working properly. Below is a good example of a proper instrument check. Click Here to get the verbiage as a PDF file that way you can keep it with you on your kneeboard until you feel comfortable to do your instrument check without it. You can fold it in half and flip it back and forth depending on which plane you are in. Make sure you are pointing at each instrument as you are checking it, DPEs like to see that you are visually confirming what you are say.

"The airspeed indicator is showing 0. Attitude indicator is showing wings level, blue over brown. Altimeter is showing within 75ft of field elevation, which is (state the airport’s field elevation). Vertical speed indicator is showing no climbs or descents. The HSI is matching the magnetic compass, which is showing no cracks, bubbles, or leaks and the compass deviation card is present. The standby attitude indicator is showing wings level, blue over brown. Standby Airspeed is showing 0. And the standby altimeter is showing within 75ft of field elevation, which is (state the airport’s field elevation)."

6 Pack

The Piper Seminoles are equipped with a standard 6 pack. The instrument check is very similar to the G500 in the sense where we have the same instruments and we are checking them in the same ways. The difference is the order they are done. It makes it much easier if you do your checks in a sort of backwards C. So starting with the airspeed, attitude, altimeter, VSI, HSI, and then the new one, the turn coordinator as you see in Image 2. The same thing applies, make sure you are pointing at each instrument as you are checking it.

The turn coordinator is showing wings level and balls is in the cage."
